Chhattisgarh on Friday banned fish seed production and farming of the exotic Magur (Clarias gariepinus) and Big head (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) fishes in the state.
The Fisheries Department issued a notification to this effect.
No fisherman, individual, group or committee shall produce fish seed of these prohibited fishes in any Central or state government or personal water bodies, it said.
The ban also affects transportation, import and marketing of these fishes.
If any person violates this, the department will deny him or her from accessing all kinds of government fisheries-related schemes.
Violators will face one-year imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine or both.
