AIIMS Raipur has become the first institute in central India and the first among new AIIMSs to successfully conduct a brain pacemaker (Deep Brain Stimulation or DBS) surgery to reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in a patient.

An official communication on Monday said a 42-year-old female from Baloda Bazaar in Chhattisgarh came with advanced stage of Parkinson’s disease with highly abnormal bodily movements. She had been suffering for seven years and was under medication.

As the medication was not effective, experts suggested DBS. With DBS surgery, the patient was able to regain control of her movements.

The patient was primarily evaluated by Dr. Abhijit Kohat (movement disorder specialist at DKS Raipur) and the case was discussed with Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma (Neurosurgeon, AIIMS, Raipur).

Details were brought to the notice of Prof. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Director, AIIMS, Raipur.

The surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team of doctors including Dr. Sharma, Dr. Abhijit Kohat, Dr. Sarvana Sukriya, anesthetist Dr. Monika Khetrapal and Dr. N.K. Bodhey from the radiology department.

The surgery was performed under the guidance of Dr. Rupam Borgohain, Dr. Rajesh Alugolu and Dr. Rukmini Mridula from Hyderabad. The patient was discharged recently.
