As many as 9,500 people have died in about 30,000 road accidents which took place in Chhattisgarh in the last three years leaving more than 25,000 injured, official sources said on Tuesday.

The accidents and the death rate in the State is considered to be higher in comparison to similar incidents in States like Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Chhattisgarh has been witnessing an increase in the numbers of both the two and four wheelers after it was declared as a State on November 1, 2000.

The gravity of the situation is evident from the fact that during last three-four days more than a dozen people were killed in separate road accidents. Experts said there has been a rise in accident cases because the numbers of vehicles have gone up. Besides many roads do not have signals and other traffic symbols.

Majority of those getting killed were mostly two wheeler riders. Similarly many accidents have taken place due to drunken driving.

The issue of accidents had also rocked the Rajya Sabha in the recent past. According to the reply placed by the Central Government, more than 130,000 people die every year in the country due to road accidents.
