The Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) has geared up to treat Kharun river’s water by setting up eight sewage treatment plants, officials informed.
The civic body will be spending Rs 220 crores for setting up a total of eight plants to treat sewage flowing from 17 nullahs into the river.
There is also a plan to convert moss generated in the river water into manure by constructing compost pits under Solid liquid Resource Management (SlRM).
The eight sewage treatment plants would be constructed on the bank of Kharun river.
The RMC has completed the survey for the project while tender worth Rs 220 crores would be floated after preparing Detailed Porject Report (DPR) between July to August months.
Talking to The Pioneer, Raipur Municipal Commissioner Rajat Bansal said that the survey for sewage treatment plant has been completed while tender would be floated after preparing DPR within the next three months.
The Kharun river is being threatened by pollution from the industries which are on the outskirts of the city, observed Raipur’s ‘Smart City’ proposal document for ‘The Smart City Challenge Stage-II’ of India Smart City Mission.
It further mentioned: “Protecting the natural features like the river, natural nullah and the ponds from these (industrial effluents) eminent threats will be the city’s top priority leading to sustainable development.”
Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (CECB) will be making available all pollution measuring data of the State online, the Board had announced in December last year in a day-long workshop organized on monitoring and quality test of pollution measuring equipment organised joint by CECB, CSIR- National Physical laboratory at Paryavas Bhavan in Naya Raipur.
Notably, Chhattisgarh is among four other States which has submitted DPR for funding under the National Adaptation Fund on Climate Change (NAFCC) at a total cost of approximately Rs 108 crore for implementation.
Notably, the ninth meeting of the National Steering Committee on Climate Change (NSCCC) was held recently.
