With a haze of dust settled over the Capital, many people are facing breathing problems especially the elderly and the young. Here are a few home remedies that can help them, says ROSHANI DEVI

Not all of us have the luxury of leaving the city whenever air pollution reaches dangerous levels. Those working can’t always stay indoors. And as of now, there is very little that we can do  undo the harm that we have already done to the environment, especially air. But there are a few home remedies that one can follow to reduce the harmful effects.

Most people will tell you to eat jaggery but it is peak summers and it may not agree with many. Also, gur is not good for diabetes. But drinking tea with tulsi and ginger twice a day will help build your immunity. Eat plenty of citrus fruits like lemon and gooseberries. The Vitamin C in them will also help the body.

Another fruit that will help cut pollution is pomegranate (anar). Drink its juice, it purifies blood.

Most households have a tulsi plant. Besides religious connotations, the plant has the ability to absorb pollution. Drink 10-15 ml of tulsi juice; this will help clear the  respiratory tract of pollutants.

Most doctors would advise you from doing this, but putting two drops of pure desi ghee in the nostrils every morning and at bedtime will help clear the pollutants. But ensure that the ghee is absolutely pure.

Eat home cooked food and use herbs like haldi, ajwain and ginger in food.
