Much to the relief of the country’s hockey fraternity, Hockey India coach Terry Walsh, who had tendered his resignation from the post on Tuesday, has decided to stay on.
The U-turn came after Walsh had a discussion with the top officials in the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) where he was assured that his grievances would be addressed in a fresh contract.
Walsh’s decision was announced by Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who tweeted, “I am happy that after SAI’s efforts #TerryWalsh is back. looking ahead for a bright future for Indian hockey.” SAI Director General Jiji Thomson said things have moved in the positive direction and Walsh will be offered a new contract before November 19.
According to Thomson, Walsh had no problems with regard to the tax deduction or remuneration. His major concern was lack of functional autonomy in deciding technical matters relating to hockey. He wants more
freedom in decision making, along with Hockey India’s High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans.
A meeting of all the concerned parties will be convened soon to arrive at an amicable solution.
