Family members of Gajendra Singh — who committed suicide at an AAP rally in Delhi on Wednesday— held the party leaders and Delhi administration responsible for his death during his last rites at his native village on Thursday. “I personally hold Arvind Kejriwal responsible for this incident,” Vijendra Singh, brother of Gajendra Singh Kalyan, told the media.

“Manish Sisodia had asked Gajendra to attend Wednesday’s AAP rally,” Vijendra Singh added. Venting ire against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, relatives claimed that Kalyan could have been saved if police and party workers had acted on time. “Why did the people let him climb up the treeIJ It were the AAP workers who helped him. When he was threatening to jump or hang, why didn’t police call the fire brigade and make efforts to bring him downIJ” asked Girdhari Singh, grandfather of Kalyan.

Singh’s elder son Bittu (12) performed the last rites after the body was taken in a large procession for cremation. leaders from both ruling BJP and Opposition Congress announced financial assistance to the family. Arun Chaturvedi, Rajasthan Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, said BJP would pay compensation of Rs4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Chaturvedi said Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is also likely to announce ex-gratia for the farmer’s family.
