Suspected Trinamool Congress mercenaries on Wednesday hurled bombs and fired bullets on BJP supporters who were returning after attending a party meeting at Parui Village in Birbhum district. The well-attended rally was addressed by party State president Rahul Sinha. As many as six BJP supporters received grievous injuries in the attack.
“Many of our supporters were also stopped from coming to the meeting as their buses were attacked and they were forced to return” Sinha said, adding SK Anarul, a local BJP leader, received bullet injuries. Another party supporter Salim was hurt in the bomb attack.
“Countless bombs were rained and Trinamool goons fired on our vehicle. In the melee many of our men got injured,” said Taufiq, a local BJP supporter.
The incidents took place near Harishpur and Hemadpur villages not far from Makra under Parui police station where three persons died last month in a gunfight between the Trinamool and BJP men.
The area is also close to Chowmandalpur, where a large posse of policemen was attacked with bombs by Trinamool henchmen when they raided the village to unearth a stockpile of crude bombs. Subsequently, the police recovered and detonated hundreds of bombs and muskets from the village.
“The Trinamool Congress is getting jittery because of the swift expansion of our base and the attack is the result of that nervousness” Sinha said.
He said that the “rally was highly successful as the locals told us that they had never seen such a big meeting at Parui.” More than 40,000 people attended the meeting locals said.
Earlier, a similar meeting was held at Bolpur town and it saw six times the turnout in comparison to a meeting addressed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP State president who launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool said the “large rallies only prove that the people have taken a decision to throw the Trinamool Congress out of Bengal.”
Sinha, who rushed to the Sultanpur Hospital where the injured were admitted, alleged that instead of arresting the culprits the police were bringing false charges on BJP supporters.
“When I spoke to the Superintendent of Police, to my astonishment I found that he was taking sides. He totally reversed the story and alleged that it was the BJP men who had attacked the Trinamool supporters. But my question is if that was the story then how did our men get injuredIJ” he said.
