The condition of veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister, VC Shukla, remained critical but stable on Monday. Shukla is battling for his life in Medanta hospital, Gurgaon.

According to Dr Naresh Trehan, CMD of Medanta hospital, Shukla’s vital parameters are functioning well at the moment but he is not in a condition to interact

with anyone. “He is on life support system in ICU-4. The age factor is a big concern for us as he is 84, the chances of improvement get thinner at this stage, he said.

“We have found three gunshot wounds on his body apart from other injuries. An emergency surgery had been carried out on him on Sunday and doctors found two gunshot wounds on his chest and one in his abdomen. The damage due to gunshot has been repaired and we are hopeful that he would recover from here”, Trehan added.

The bullet injuries have severely affected his abdomen as infection spread to his liver, kidneys and intestines. The intestinal injuries in his body was a matter of concern for the team of doctors as it might affect other vital organs.

"We are in a process to clean infected areas in his body with antibiotics so that toxics are removed. The doctors have been providing multiple treatments to him. A multi-disciplinary team of 15-20 doctors has been constituted for this purpose, and they are tracking his condition round the clock", Dr Yatin Mehta, chairman of Critical Care Unit in Medanta hospital, said.

The family members of Shukla, including his wife Sarla Shukla, son, daughters and four senior Congress workers, are taking care of him in the hospital.

Sharad Yadav of JDU and Syed Ahmed, Governor of Jharkhand, visited Shukla and his family members on Sunday.
