S-I loses control of car, kills 3 women

Staff Reporter

A day after a Delhi Traffic Police Head Constable hit a woman with a brick,  another policeman was arrested and booked for mowing down three women with his car in south-east Delhi’s Badarpur area on Tuesday morning. The deceased women were sanitation workers at a toll plaza in Badarpur. Three other women were also injured in the incident.

The six women sanitation workers were busy with their daily chores at the toll plaza when they were hit by a Santro car that was being driven at a breakneck speed. The accused was identified as Sub-Inspector Rishi Pal, posted with the Command Room of the Police Control Room (PCR) at the Police Headquarters (PHQ). He tried to escape but was caught by locals at the toll booth, who later handed him over to police.

A case under Section 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) has been slapped against him and he has also been put under arrest.  The deceased were identified as Shakuntala (55) , Meera (50) and Maya (28).

The incident took place about 9.30 am when Rishi Pal was going back home to Faridabad after night duty. Preliminary investigation suggests that he dozed off while driving and lost control which led to the mishap. His car rammed into the women who were busy clearing the garbage.

The collision was so severe that Shakuntala died on the spot while Meera and Maya died after they were taken to AIIMS. The other three injured women were also rushed to the hospital and they are currently stable.

“Our shift starts at 7.30 am and the incident took place around 9.30 am. The driver was caught by the guards,” said one of the women who had a narrow escape.
