A woman, who holds a Jan Dhan account, has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention after she found to her disbelief around Rs 100 crore deposited in her State Bank of India (SBI) account from unknown sources.
In a complaint to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), her husband Ziledar Singh wrote, “My wife Sheetal Yadav maintains a Jan Dhan account at the Sharda Road branch of SBI in Meerut. On December 18, she went to withdraw money from the ATM of ICICI bank in the neighbourhood and was startled to find a balance of Rs 99,99,99,394 in her account.”
Unable to believe it, she asked the person standing next to her in the queue to check it and he confirmed the same amount. She went to another ATM of YES bank nearby and found the same balance.
She visited her bank for a couple of days but the staff did not attend to her complaint and asked her to come next day when the branch manager would assist her to rectify the matter. When she went again to the bank, she was sent back under another pretext.
It was only after this that the woman, who works in the packaging department of a factory, sought help from her husband who works in transformer manufacturing company.
When asked about their predicament, Singh told The Pioneer that his wife draws a salary of Rs 5,000 per month and hence he was shocked to know about the huge amount deposited in her account.
“The bank employees are not helping. I have sent an e-mail to the PMO on December 26 (Monday) seeking intervention. I am unable to comprehend as to how bank officials allowed this deposit when Jan Dhan accounts are capped at the maximum balance of Rs 50,000,” said Singh.
The Pioneer tried to contact the bank officials for their
side of the story but no bank employee was available for comments.
