India and Russia on Friday discussed the entire gamut of their bilateral ties during telephonic talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin. Both the leaders also reiterated their commitment to further strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership, the Kremlin said, adding they also discussed the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The Kremlin statement also said Prime Minister Modi has expressed support for the actions taken by the Russian leadership in connection with the short-lived armed rebellion by the Wagner mercenary group last week.

“In connection with the June 24 developments, Modi expressed understanding and support for the resolute actions by the Russian authorities to defend law and order, and ensure stability in the country and security of its citizens,” it said. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in New Delhi said Modi reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict as he spoke to the Russian President over phone.

In their talks, the two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, the PMO said, adding that Putin informed Modi about the recent developments in Russia.

“While discussing the situation in Ukraine, the PM reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy,” it said. Russia has been engaged in a conflict with Ukraine for over a year, with the western world rallying against Putin over the war.
