Man assaulted over anti-Marathi remarks

A video from Virar, Maharashtra, showing a rickshaw driver from Uttar Pradesh being assaulted by alleged Shiv Sena (UBT) workers for making “anti-Marathi” remarks has gone viral, intensifying the language row in the state. The driver, accused of insulting Marathi and refusing to speak it during a roadside spat, was publicly slapped and forced to apologise. Shiv Sena (UBT) defended the act as a lesson for disrespecting Maharashtra. Police confirmed the incident but said no formal complaint has been filed. The controversy comes amid recent protests and clashes over Marathi identity and language pride in the Mumbai metropolitan region.

ULFA claims attacks by armed forces

The banned militant group ULFA(I) on Sunday claimed that the Indian Army launched drone and missile strikes on its camps along the Myanmar border, killing three of its leaders and injuring around 19 others. In a press statement, ULFA(I) said the early morning drone attacks targeted multiple mobile camps, resulting in the death of Nayan Asom, its ‘lower council’ chairman. Later, the group alleged missiles were fired during the last rites of the slain leader, killing senior members ‘Brigadier’ Ganesh Asom and ‘Colonel’ Pradip Asom, and injuring several others, including civilians. However, the Indian Army has denied any knowledge of such operations. “There are no inputs of any such incident,” said defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also denied State police involvement and ruled out any attack.

MHA flags prison radicalisation

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has raised alarm over growing radicalisation in Indian prisons, calling it a critical threat to internal security and public order. In fresh guidelines to states and Union Territories, the MHA recommended screening inmates, regular risk assessments, segregating high-risk individuals, and promoting de-radicalisation efforts. It warned that prisons, being closed environments, can foster extremist ideologies due to social isolation and lack of oversight. The MHA urged states to develop standardised screening tools, coordinate with intelligence agencies, and consider setting up high-security prison complexes to house radicalised or terrorist inmates separately, under enhanced surveillance and monitoring.
