Noted journalist and The Times of India’s Managing Editor Arindam Sengupta,

61, passed away on Thursday after a brief battle with

lung cancer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were among a host of political leaders who condoled the death of Sengupta, who had an over two-decade association with TOI.

“An accomplished editor who was widely admired, Arindam Sengupta impacted many lives through journalism. Pained by his demise. RIP (rest in peace),” Modi tweeted.

Calling him a

complete professional, Arun Jaitley said Sengupta’s death is a great loss to journalism.

Fondly called “ASG”, Sengupta had rejoined Times of India group in 1991 after a previous stint from 1988

to 1990. He was Editor of Economic Times before he was shifted to TOI to head its

Delhi operations.

In his 33-year-long

career, Sengupta also worked with Probe magazine, The Patriot newspaper and The Sunday Observer.

After completing his MA from Delhi University where he studied at St Stephen’s College, Sengupta taught at Delhi University. He then switched

to journalism.
