Mystery shrouds death of top bureaucrat, wife

Staff Reporter

A joint-secretary-level official of the Government of India and his wife, a senior manager of a private bank, were found killed in mysterious circumstances at their official residence at Kaka Nagar in the South East Delhi on Friday. The throat of 57-year-old K Vijay Kumar, Advisor, Costing in the Union Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies, was found slit and his body was lying on the bed, while his wife, Sita (53), was found hanging from the ceiling fan. However, as her legs were touching the floor, it appears that she was first killed and then hanged.

What has baffled the investigators is that Kaka Nagar houses several top civil servants and there are round the clock security arrangements. Yet none of the residents and the security personnel had any inkling about the mysterious murders.

The grisly murders were discovered by the daughter, Paranya, of Vijay Kumar and Sita around 4.30 pm, when she returned to her house at D-2/20, Kaka Nagar. Paranya found that the doors of the first-floor flat were locked from inside. She then informed her father’s office  and they came rushing to the house. They in turn informed the police and the staff of Police Control Room and the staff of Nizamuddin police station. Police then broke open the doors and the bodies of Vijay and his wife Sita were discovered in two different rooms of the flat.

Police are not ruling out the suicide angle as the flat where the couple were killed had no signs of struggle and also the entry of the house was found bolted from inside. Police had to use force to break open the door, sources said on Friday. Police also checked the back door of the house and that was also found locked from inside. Even windows were bolted from inside.

K Vijay Kumar belonged to Indian Costing and Accounts Services (ICAS) and had joined Food and Civil Supplies Ministry last month only. He was earlier posted with the Tariff Commission of India.

There was no sign of ransacking and all articles in the house were found intact. Forensic experts and dog squad were summoned on the spot and the scene of crime was mapped by the fingerprints experts who are believed to have lifted some chance prints and the same were being analysed. The Delhi Police also requisitioned the services of the experts from the Central Forensic Sciences laboratory (CFSl) to ensure that nothing was left to the chance.

Joint Commissioner of Police, South-Eastern Range, Vivek Gogia said that they have formed three teams to look into all the aspects of the investigations. We have registered a case of murder on the basis of the preliminary investigations. There are certain leads and the same are being investigated upon, he added.
