The Delhi Police has issued a lookout notice for three absconding Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students — Umar Khalid, Riyaz ul Haq and Anirban Bhattacharya — in connection with the February 9 event organised on the campus to hail Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in which anti-India slogans were raised.

DCP south communicated the matter to the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), asking it to alert airport authorities so that the three suspects do not leave the country. Following this, the lookout notice was issued late on Friday, a police source said.

The three — Khalid, Haq, a student of International Studies (Spanish) who had arranged the sound system for the event and uploaded pictures on the social media; and Bhattacharya, a PhD scholar of Modern History who had prepared posters and banners and sought permission for the event — have been identified as the main conspirators in connection with the event, over which a case of sedition was registered and JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested.

The Delhi police on Saturday recorded statement of Khalid’s Bijnor-based journalist friend Sadiq Naqvi. According to police, Khalid and Naqvi completed their graduation from Kirori Mal College and during questioning, Naqvi reported to have stated that he met Khalid two months ago.

Police tracked the youths’ call details post February 9 till the day their phones were found to be switched off. Investigators have also recorded statements of more than a dozen JNU students who were witnesses, sources said.

Meanwhile, the Special Cell has also been roped in the ongoing search operation across cities. Police are looking out for ten people in connection with the event at JNU.
