Just as DDA seemed history, Delhi thronged to book flats

The second last day of the biggest ever housing scheme in the national Capital witnessed a huge rush on Tuesday. From a mere three lakh registrations until October 9, the extension of the scheme by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) seems to have worked in its favour as it received 5.25 lakh applications till October 14. The scheme, which offers 25,034 flats in areas like Dwarka, Rohini and Narela, ends on Wednesday at 5 pm.

In just five days of its extension, the DDA received 2.25 lakh registrations, whereas, till for over a month altogether the housing agency had just received around three lakh applications. As the scheme comes to an end on Wednesday, the DDA expects to have at least 6.7 to 7 lakh registrations. With only 16,000 houses on offer, the 2010 housing scheme had received 7.4 lakh registrations.

Officials claim that the tepid response this year might be due to lack of two and three bedroom flats on offer. Besides, another significant reason could be the clause of a five-year lock-in period introduced by the DDA for the first time, officials added. DDA is offering 25,034 flats in different categories. Of these, 22,627 flats are one bedroom flats. Most of the flats are from old inventory. Only 512 MIG flats are included in the newly-constructed flats.
