India is keen to see a “united, inclusive and stable” Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Nepalese leadership during his meeting with Nepalese Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa on Monday. Thapa is in New Delhi to seek support of the Indian Government for the smooth supply of essential commodities to the Himalayan country, which has been affected by the Madhesi agitation.
During their meeting, Thapa briefed Modi about developments in Nepal and conveyed his Government’s commitment on the reconciliation process and Constitutional amendment. The PM reiterated: “India’s only desire is to see a united, inclusive, stable, and prosperous Nepal, and that India is committed to strengthening the traditional bonds of friendship and kinship with the people of Nepal.”
Modi congratulated Thapa on assuming charge as the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal. The Prime Minister also conveyed his greetings and best wishes to the new Government of Nepal.
The Indian Government has urged the neighbouring nation to address the concerns of its “own citizens” and take along everyone in the decision-making process to bridge the divide between Terai and Pahar.
Thapa’s visit to New Delhi is seen as a “reaching out” gesture by Nepal after the relations between two countries went through a low phase due to the agitation by Indian-origin Madhesis in Nepal. Protests along the borders in Nepal hit supplies of essential commodities from India. On Sunday, during his meeting with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Thapa had urged India to send supplies from alternative routes that are not facing agitation.
