Iran’s decision to exempt Indian vessels from restrictions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz has drawn attention amid a significant political shift in the United States, where the Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.
The Iranian announcement, made shortly before the US election results emerged, comes at a sensitive moment in the conflict between Washington and Tehran. The developments have added fresh uncertainty to the region’s diplomatic and security landscape, particularly concerning maritime trade and international shipping.
A senior Iranian lawmaker said on Tuesday that vessels from India, China, Iraq and Qatar had been allowed to navigate the Strait of Hormuz without facing the restrictions imposed on other commercial ships.
Amir Hayat-Moghaddam, deputy chairman of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the decision reflected Tehran’s interests in maintaining trade and political relationships with the four countries.
