Flash flood not due to cloudburst: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said the flash flood near the Amarnath shrine’s cave on Friday was the result of a highly localised rain event in the upper reaches of the mountains and not a cloudburst. “This cannot be categorised as a cloudburst. A rain event can be categorised as a cloudburst only if a weather station receives 100 mm of rain in an hour,” the IMD said.
