As resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safadarjung Hospital continued their strike for the third consecutive day against the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, the administration of both the hospitals on Saturday asked them to resume work immediately or face punitive actions like termination from services and eviction from hostels.

The protest has affected the medical services even in emergency departments of some of city hospitals, including AIIMS.

However, RML Hospital medical superintendent Dr VK Tiwari told The Pioneer that the hospital has resumed all services for the patients.

Additional police force has been deployed outside the AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospitals as striking doctors marched towards the arterial Ring Road.

Dr Sunil Gupta, Safadarjung Hospital medical superintendent, said emergency services are being tackled by the regular faculty. “We cannot say when the strike will be called off, but regular faculty is looking after the emergency.”

When asked about OPD services in Safadarjung hospital, Dr Gupta said, “Yes OPD is affected partially due to the ongoing strike by the resident doctors.”

In an official statement, Dr Gupta said that I have been asked by the Ministry to inform you that if the striking doctors do not resume their duties immediately, strict punitive action like suspension/termination of services, vacation of hostel accommodation will be initiated immediately against all striking doctors.”
