After a brief relief due to moderate pre-monsoon showers, scorching summer heat gripped the national Capital on Sunday with the maximum temperature settling above 45 degrees Celsius.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, weather conditions are likely to continue for next 48 hours. The discomfort is anticipated with more increase in mercury level.

At Palam, the maximum temperature was recorded at 47 degrees Celsius, highest of the season. In the span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Saturday, the Palam Observatory recorded a typical rise in temperature.

At Safadrjung , maximum temperature was recorded 44.6 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature was 30.4 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperature at Aayanagar was 46.6 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature was 30.8 degrees Celsius.

While at Delhi ridge, maximum and minimum temperatures were 46.2 degrees Celsius and 29.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

The entire National Capital Region (NCR), including some parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, is reeling under the heat waves.

According to private weather forecast company, Skymet, this blistering weather can be attributed to the west-southwesterly winds blowing over the region. These winds are carrying hot air mass from Rajasthan as well as Central Pakistan that is already whirling under heat wave conditions.

“Hence, the sky will remain clear, with no possibility of rain for now. Besides this, hot winds are expected to blow during afternoon hours leaving Delhiites at unease,” Skymet forecast further.

Meanwhile, IMD in its weekly weather forecast has predicted that maximum temperature will be 47 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperature will oscillate between 27 degrees and 31 degrees Celsius. Met has also predicted rainfall on June 6 which will help bring down the mercury level.

The humidity levels oscillated between 44 and 15 per cent, weather department officials said. The weatherman has forecast clear skies on Monday.

On Saturday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 42.6 and 28.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
