Delhi air hostess suicide: Hubby sent to judicial custody

Staff Reporter

A Delhi court on Tuesday sent Mayank Singhvi, the husband of a female flight attendant Anissia Batra, who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi’s Panchsheel Park on Friday, to two weeks’ judicial custody after the Delhi Police moved an application saying the accused was not required for custodial interrogation.

Advocate Ishkaran Singh Bhandari, appearing for Anissia, urged the court that a look-out notice be issued against Mayank’s parents.

Police told the court that they are doing the needful.  Anissia’s family has alleged that her husband used to physically abuse her. Anissia, 39, who worked with a German airline, had allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house. Following the probe, Mayank was arrested on Monday.

Meanwhile, DCP (South District) Romil Baaniya said, “Mayank’s family members have been exempted from the probe by the court till July 20, after which notice will be issued to them to join the investigation.

“We got the call from the hospital around 6:30 pm. The incident happened around 4:30pm. The husband got the message around 4:15 pm. There are some eye witnesses to the incident whom we are still investigating. It was found that the couple had an argument before the incident but the facts are not out yet. We are still waiting for the result of the second post mortem.”

The couple had been married for over two years and lived in Panchsheel Park. In her complaint, Anissia’s mother alleged that Mayank used to regularly abuse her daughter.

Before jumping off the terrace, she had sent a message to her husband that she would kill herself, police said. When he reached there, a labourer from the adjacent house told him that she had jumped.

She was rushed to Max Hospital and police were informed. She succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Her husband, a software engineer in Gurgaon, told police that they had regular fights as there were “compatibility issues”.

The victim’s family also alleged that Mayank would often demand money from Anissia.  They had also filed a complaint to police on June 27 saying that if anything happens to their daughter, Mayank would be held responsible.
