A 27-year-old man, who gave a `50-lakh supari to contract killers to murder his elder brother, has been arrested along with the three murderers, police said on Sunday. The younger brother was not happy with his elder brother as he had sold a jointly held property for `2 crore and had pocketed the entire amount.

The murder was committed on the intervening night of February 22 and 23 when one Sujan Singh (32) was waylaid by a gang of four contract killers on National Highway-8. Singh, a resident of Sidhrawali Village in Gurgaon, was returning home after attending a wedding when he was killed.

A case was registered at the Bilaspur Police Station and the investigation was handed over to Gurgaon Police Crime Branch after the local police failed to make any headway. The Crime Branch arrested four people, including the deceased’s brother Ajit Singh after they managed to piece together the sequence of events.

The investigation was handed over to Inspector Anil Kumar of Crime Branch who developed source information about the conspirator and killers. Investigations led the Crime Branch to Ajit Singh, the younger brother of deceased Sujan Singh. Police said the deceased and his grandmother had sold agricultural land in Rajasthan for Rs 2 crore. The money was deposited in the grandmother’s account, and she gave power of attorney to the elder grandson. The joint family was also planning to sell another two acres of land.

This development further infuriated Ajit Singh who was already nursing a grudge against his elder brother for denying his share of the sale proceeds. He accordingly hatched a conspiracy to eliminate his elder brother with the help of contract killers. Ajit Singh, who lived in the joint family, however, wanted control of his grandmother’s bank account and hatched the plot. On the day of the killing, Ajit left the family at a marriage function in the village, and went to inform the killers. The killers waited for Sujan Singh on the NH-8 and shot him dead, police said.

The investigating officer (IO) was startled to find that it was Ajit Singh who had given the contract to eliminate his elder brother and had offered Rs 50 lakh to Vinod Kumar alias Murli of Sidhrawali village to kill his brother, said a police officer of Gurgaon South district.

It was also revealed that Murli further sub-contracted the killing to Vinod Singh alias Kalu and Pintu, residents of Bhora Khurd village, and promised them Rs 5 lakh each, Inspector Anil Kumar said. Kalu and Pintu reached the spot on a bike and shot dead Sujan Singh while he was walking home. Ajit had already provided nearly Rs 1.5 lakh to the killers. Police said all the accused will be produced before the designated court here on Monday.
