Brazil’s Lula wins a fourth term

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a historic fourth term after defeating Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff election, securing 51.8 per cent of the votes. The victory marks a major setback for the political movement of former President Jair Bolsonaro and extends Lula’s decades-long political career.

The 80-year-old Left-wing leader secured crucial support from poorer voters, particularly in Brazil’s northeastern region, helping him overcome Flávio’s first-round lead. Lula’s campaign focused on social welfare, household debt relief and protecting Brazil’s national sovereignty.

His stance against US President Donald Trump’s trade pressure also featured prominently.

Lula now faces significant challenges, including rising public debt, economic uncertainty, political polarisation and pressure from financial markets. Although Brazil recorded strong economic growth and low unemployment during his third term, many households continue to struggle with the cost of living.

Following his victory, Lula pledged to change the way his Government operates and address the country’s deep divisions. His fourth term will test whether the veteran politician can turn his electoral comeback into lasting economic and political progress.
