Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday demanded the arrest of Trinamool Congress MP from Nadia Mahua Moitra saying her remarks on Goddess Kali had hurt religious sentiments of the people and that action should be taken against her.

Moitra had made some derogatory statements while trying to justify the portrayal of the Goddess smoking a cigarette in a film. Attacking the TMC leadership for not taking any action against her, Adhikari said he was giving ten days’ time to the Government to act “after which we will act.”

Saying that this was the last warning to people like Moitra, he said, “This is the last time we will tolerate people using derogatory terms against Hindu deities in Bengal. Next time, we will not give anyone a chance to speak against our gods and goddesses. We will not stop protesting until she holds her ears and apologises.”

He added, “Already cases have been registered against her in many places, including Bengal… we want the Government to take action against Mahua Moitra … we will wait for another 10 days … if they do not take action then we will move the court against her,” Adhikari said.

Accusing the State Government of double standards, he said, “The State police had promptly acted against Nupur Sharma. But they have not taken any action against Mahua Moitra.”

Though the TMC distanced itself from Moitra’s statement, the Nadia MP remained defiant saying she was herself a worshipper of Kali and knew what was right and what was wrong.

A defiant Moitra, who had earlier stirred a hornets’ nest saying that Kali was worshiped with alcohol and subsequently tweeted, “To all you sanghis - lying will NOT make you better Hindus. I NEVER backed any film or poster or mentioned the word smoking. Suggest you visit my Maa Kali in Tarapith to see what food & drink is offered as bhog. Joy Ma Tara (another name and form of Kali).”

The BJP’s anti-Moitra tirade is seen as a measure to counter the police actions initiated by the Trinamool Congress Government against saffron leader Nupur Sharma who had reportedly made some derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

Also launching a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee for using the “jehad” word to further her electoral ambitions, he said such usages had gone into the gene of the ruling Trinamool Congress and that such words were being deliberately used by the Chief Minister to play to a certain section of the gallery.
