Another hike to milk us dry

After vegetables, now even procuring milk is set to burn a hole in the pocket of the common man. To set the trend, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation that markets its products under the brand Amul, on Monday, announced a hike of Rs 2 per litre in its milk prices in Delhi and National Capital Region.

While the new rates of Amul will come into effect from Tuesday, other milk producing companies operational in the Capital are also expected to follow the upward revision within the coming week.

Following the price rise, now, Amul Gold (full cream) milk will cost Rs 44 a litre, compared to the current price of Rs 42, while Amul Taaza (toned milk) will cost Rs 34 a litre, up from the current Rs 32.

The new price of Amul Slim and Trim double toned milk will be Rs 30 a litre, compared to the existing price of Rs 28.Explaining the reason behind the 10 per cent hike which will gradually be made applicable in all other parts of the country where Amul milk is being sold, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation officials said, “The primary reason behind the price rise is inflation.

Costs of cattle feed, dry and green fodder, diesel and other inputs have substantially increased over the past one year. This year’s extended monsoon has also led to a scarcity of fodder and, therefore, overall fodder prices have increased by about 30 per cent. There has been an increase of 15 per cent in the price of cattle feed since September 2012.” With an average daily milk procurement of over 11.5 million litres per day, Amul sells 3.5 million litres of milk daily in its Delhi and Mumbai markets alone.
