Common eligibility criteria scrapped; aspirants will now be subjected to additional admissibility yardstick by each college
The scrapping of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) has brought along with it several changes in the admission procedure this year. One of the most significant changes is that the common eligibility criteria for students while getting admission will no longer be applicable.
Students will now be subjected to additional eligibility criterion declared by each college. This change was decided during the meeting of the principals’ monitoring and advisory committee on Saturday.
According to the committee’s decision, additional eligibility criteria will be applicable as per the practice of 2012-13.
“Detailed additional eligibility criteria of each college will be uploaded on to the college website before the admission process starts and shall be prominently displayed on the college notice boards. Once notified, the additional eligibility criteria cannot be changed during the entire admission process,” said the notification released by the university on its website.
This year, the university had introduced common eligibility criteria where students would face the same advantages and disadvantages in all colleges. However, now students will have to go by the earlier eligibility criterion where they had to fulfill the college’s criteria of having a minimum percentage for a particular subject for admission to certain courses irrespective of meeting the cut-off. As a result of this, many students may be denied admission for Honours course if their marks don’t support them. The minimum percentage for Honours courses will vary from one college to another.
“The same would apply for the disadvantage that students will get while seeking Honours in a subject they haven’t studied in class XII. This year a common two per cent disadvantage was set for these students but now it will depend on each college to determine this. It is likely that the disadvantage even increases up to five per cent of the ‘best of four’ aggregate in some colleges,” said a university official.
Meanwhile, the university has also given all applicants the option to choose the course of their choice. The principals’ committee unanimously concluded that all the candidates already registered online or offline through the university, for the current academic year, will now be eligible for admission to all courses wherever they meet the eligibility criteria.
Furthermore, the university also gives an option to students who did not register to apply now. The notification issued by DU reads, “All candidates who have not already registered will be required to fill the university registration form, on the payment of Rs 100 (general or OBC) and Rs 50 (SC, ST or PwD), along with the college admission form in case they meet the cut-off and qualify for admission.”
However, university officials added that if the candidate registers in one college and decides to take admission in another college or course in the subsequent cut-off lists, the registration once made in a college will remain valid. Admissions are slated to begin on Tuesday and will end on July 31.
