An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) posted with the anti-terror unit of Special Cell of the Delhi Police was assaulted by the family members of a minor driver near lodhi Road crematorium in South Delhi on Thursday evening.
Police sources said that ACP Amit Singh — who was in civil dress as Special Cell officers normally do not wear police uniform — was on his way to his office in lodhi Colony when he spotted a minor driving a car recklessly near lodhi Road Crematorium on Thursday around 4.30 pm.
As the minor’s car grazed Singh’s official car, which does not have any insignia of the Delhi Police as the Special Cell officers move in disguise, the driver of the ACP signalled the minor driver to stop his car. While the ACP’s driver was informing the minor driver about traffic rules, his parents and other kin who were following the minor on bikes, stopped there and picked up a fight with Singh’s driver. As the ACP tried to intervene, the kin of the minor driver started thrashing Singh as well.
A passerby informed the police control room. Within minutes, police officers from the Special Cell, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajiv Ranjan, reached the spot. The injured ACP was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre.
AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said, “Singh sustained minor injures, including a fracture in the nasal bone. He went through various tests there and is currently admitted in the private ward.”
Three suspects have been detained by the police. The parents of the minor driver have been identified as Yogesh and Rajni, residents of Greater Kailash-II.
This is the third incident of crime against men in uniform in the last few days.
