Offended by an Aam Aadmi Party’s radio jingle that casts aspersions on cops, the Delhi Police has directed all radio stations to stop broadcasting the derogatory advertisement with immediate effect.
In the wake of the rape of a 27-year-old girl by an Uber cab driver, the AAP was playing a radio jingle wherein a girl identifying herself as Ritu claims that when she was returning from a tuition class in Delhi, three youths passed lewd comments. When she approached a police station, the duty officer asked for evidence against the three accused. Fed up of the police official’s behaviour, she left the police station without registering an FIR.
“For the last few days, the Aam Aadmi Party has been running a radio jingle on most the radio stations defaming police. When it came to our notice, we have asked all the radio stations to stop broadcasting the jingle,” said a senior police officer.
In the radio jingle, the girl appealed the voters of Delhi to bring back Arvind Kejriwal to power in the Capital so that he can ensure that such kind of incidents do not take place, and the city streets are secured by closed-circuit television cameras.
The Delhi Police has asked all radio stations to always take clearance before broadcasting any derogatory jingle.
The Delhi Police has decided to approach the AAP to ascertain whether the girl Ritu is a real victim or a figment of imagination. “We maintain dairy in all the 161 police stations. There are CCTV cameras in most of the police station. We want to know which police station this girl went,” said the police officer.
The police will also probe the time of incident and will talk to Ritu, and will ask her to identify the police officials concerned. “There are woman help desk in all the police stations and whenever a woman or girl enters a police station, women police officials immediately respond to them.”
“If it is found to be false and fabricated, we will take legal help to take action against the people who made this radio jingle,” said the officer.
In the meantime, all the radio station stopped broadcasting the AAP jingle from Friday evening.
