Communal tension gripped Muzaffarpur district of Bihar on Monday as five people were killed in arson and clashes between two communities. The violence broke out on Sunday night and the death count went up on Monday when one more charred body was found from a field.

Confirming the recovery of one more body, Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police RK Mishra said at least 14 people have been arrested for violence and setting 50 houses on fire after the recovery of the body of an abducted youth.

“Security has been tightened in the area with additional deployment of 500 personnel of Bihar Military Police,” Additional DGP (HQ) Gupteshwar Pandey, who is camping at Muzaffarpur since Sunday night, said. Senior JD(U) leader and former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar condemned the Muzaffarpur incident.

“On getting information, I talked to the Chief Secretary, Director-General of Police and party leaders of both Hindu and Muslim communities at Muzaffarpur to maintain harmony at any cost,” Kumar told reporters on the sidelines of a book release function in Phulwari Sharif in Patna district.
