The mind as medicine

Today, medical professionals all over the world have accepted the fact that diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease and hypertension are the result of poor lifestyles, mental stress and tension. Hence, they are now advising less dependence on medicines and emphasising exercise and dietary control to maintain physical health. Medical research has found that almost 85 per cent of all diseases are psychosomatic in nature, ie they originate in negative mental states. Therefore, to nip the evil in the bud, it is important to tackle the malady at the level of the mind, and that involves checking and changing our patterns of thought.

Research has shown that positive thoughts sustained over a long period produce positive health effects, while negative thoughts ultimately lead to diseases. In that case, it is necessary for us to give our minds a positive direction so that we can remain happy and healthy. Having control over our thoughts means having the ability to take the mind where we want, keep it there for as long as we want and withdraw it at will. Practising this frequently, starting with even a few seconds at first, will gradually give us more control over the mind. It will also reduce waste thoughts, which consume a lot of our time and energy.

While this is a rudimentary exercise to improve our concentration, gaining mastery over the mind requires some spiritual knowledge and practice. For this, first of all, we need to understand that we are souls and not bodies. The brain, which is part of the physical body, is merely the hardware that enables the soul to control the body.

The spiritual exercise of the mind involves taking the mind out of the physical body and remaining in an eternal state of being a soul, i.e. a sentient point of light and power. Along with this exercise, one also needs to have a proper mental diet in the form of pure thoughts that are necessary to keep the mind healthy.

On the other hand, waste thoughts deplete mental energy and leave us weak. Negative thoughts are like poison and damage mental health, eroding our ability to make sound judgements, take correct decisions, tolerate negative situations or face adversity. Such thoughts arise from body-consciousness but are rooted in the soul in the form of vices such as lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.

We must understand that the most elevated thoughts arise in a state of meditation, when the soul establishes a loving mental link with the Supreme Source, who is the Father of all souls. It is through this divine connection that true healing begins, not just of the body or the mind, but of the soul itself.

When our inner world is aligned with purity, peace and purpose, the outer world begins to reflect that harmony. A healthy mind, anchored in spiritual wisdom and silence, becomes the foundation of a healthy body. So, let us strive not just for fitness, but for inner well-being, where the mind is calm, the soul is strong and the body follows. Because, in the end, lasting health is not just about how we live, but also about how we think, feel and connect with the Source.
