Ajit Pawar's entry into the State Cabinet exposes fissures in the NCP

The recent inclusion of Ajit Pawar, a prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), in the cabinet as Deputy CM has sent shockwaves through Maharashtra's political landscape. Ajit's return to the fold after his brief and controversial alliance with the BJP last year has highlighted the deep-rooted divisions within the NCP. This unexpected move has raised concerns about the party's internal dynamics and the impact it may have on its future trajectory. Though after Sharad Pawar elevated Supriya Sule and Praful Patel, giving them more responsibilities and sidelining Ajit and his sympathisers, it was a foregone conclusion. Sharad Pawar’s resignation episode a few weeks ago showed that Ajit did not have the sway over the party members demanding, as they did, Pawar’s comeback in one voice. Ajit's association with the NCP has been marked by both achievements and controversies. He is known for his astute political strategies and administrative acumen, which earned him the reputation of being a key troubleshooter for the party. However, his decision to join hands with the BJP and form a short-lived government in Maharashtra in 2019 did not work and lowered his stature as a leader who was not on the same page as stalwart Sharad Pawar. The NCP, founded by the senior Pawar, has been grappling with internal disagreements and power struggles for some time now. The party has historically witnessed factionalism, with various leaders vying for dominance. Ajit's controversial move last year exacerbated these divisions and led to a bitter feud within the party.

A section of the NCP leadership, loyal to Sharad Pawar, was deeply hurt by Ajit's decision to align with the BJP, considering it betrayal of the party's ideology and principles. The sudden shift had also caused considerable embarrassment to the NCP, forcing it to form an alliance with the Shiv Sena and the Congress to reclaim power in Maharashtra. The move has not only divided opinions within the NCP but has also raised concerns among its alliance partners. The Sena and the Congress, both wary of Ajit's past actions, have expressed apprehension about the implications of his re-entry into the government. This has further strained the already delicate relationship among the parties. With Ajit's return, the NCP faces significant challenges in restoring trust and unity within its ranks. The party must reconcile the differing factions and present a united front to effectively address the issues facing Maharashtra. The credibility and reputation of the NCP, as well as its alliance partners, are at stake, and it is crucial for them to act prudently. Ajit's entry into the cabinet has exposed deep-seated divisions within the NCP, casting a shadow over its unity and long-term prospects. The party's leadership must demonstrate strong resolve and commitment to its core principles to emerge from this episode with renewed strength and a clear vision for the future.
