Delhi University’s search committee whose formation was delayed is planning to finalise the name of the university Vice Chancellor at the earliest and get it approved by varsity’s Visitor President Pranab Mukherjee in January.

Sources said Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Vice Chancellor, Anil K Tyagi, and DU’s Dean of Examination Roop lal are among the shortlisted candidates for the VC’s post.  Sources told The Pioneer that the committee is likely to call the shortlisted candidates for an “interaction” in a meeting on December 13.

“The shortlisted candidates would be called for an interaction with the search committee. As per the rules, the name would be forwarded to the President for his approval. Since the admissions for post graduate courses are starting by February-March, the committee wants to speed up the process of getting a new Vice Chancellor to the university,” said a source from the university.

The search committee was formed late due to the controversial nomination of former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan who was then replaced by former chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) DP Agrawal.

The three-member committee also includes Chairman of University Grants Commission, Ved Prakash and former CAG Vinod Rai.

Ministry of Human Resource and Development had objected the nomination of Kasturirangan leading to controversy. The argument for removing him from the committee was that he was the honorary professor at the university and it could lead to “conflict of interest”. This controversy was stretched while the former DU Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh was still holding the position.

later, Agrawal was approved as the member by the President.  Due to this, the appointment of the Vice Chancellor was predicted to be late. However, the committee has started the process sooner than expected.

Currently, the acting Vice Chancellor is Sudhish Pachauri. Singh handed over the charge to him after his term was completed on October 28.
