In a shocking incident, a state-level badminton player was sexually harassed at her home by a neighbour in Ghosi locality of Agra on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old victim represented UP at the national level in 2016 and 2019.
In a complaint, the victim alleged that she returned from a practice session on Tuesday and was sleeping around 9:30 am when her neighbour, Vinod, entered her room and touched her private parts and assaulted her when she opposed his actions.
As she screamed for help, her younger brother rushed into the room and rescued her.
Her parents were not in the house at the time of the incident.
Ironically, soon after, Vinod’s family members assembled at the spot and beat up the victim’s brother and a friend who accused the miscreant. Later, when the shuttler approached Sadar Bazaar police station for filing a complaint against Vinod, she was told that a counter-FIR could be registered by the other party.
“I was advised by the cops to thrash out a compromise as my career could be jeopardised if I was named in the FIR. So, I returned home,” she claimed.
The sportswoman further said that Vinod’s family mocked her as she failed to get an FIR registered against them. They also threatened to destroy her career and eliminate her family in order to keep her quiet.
Upset with the sequence of events, she approached the SSP of Agra, seeking registration of a case against Vinod and his family members.
After the SSP’s direction, a case was registered at Sadar Bazaar police station against eight people under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Two of the accused were also arrested and further probe was underway.
Meanwhile, in another case in Agra, a girl was sedated by her friend through a drink and later got her raped by another friend on Thursday. Upon regaining consciousness, she called Dial-112 which rushed there and arrested the accused.
The victim was called by her friend Preeti of Fatehpur Sikri on Thursday evening on the pretext of celebrating the latter’s boyfriend Divyanshu’s birthday at the house of a friend Rajdev. The latter’s father is a retired inspector and lives in Dayalbagh area.
During the party, Preeti laced her soft drink with a sedative after which she became unconscious. Later, Preeti went into a room with her boyfriend while Rajdev raped the victim.
Early Friday morning, after regaining consciousness, she learnt about her trauma and called the police.
A case was registered against Preeti, Divyanshu and Rajdev and all three were arrested and sent to jail.
