Keeping the development of the pharmaceutical sector on high priority, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed on establishing a Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute in Uttar Pradesh.
During a high-level meeting held on Wednesday, the chief minister emphasised the significance of promoting pharmaceutical research and gave necessary directions for setting up a new institute in the state.
“The proposed Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute will focus on research and innovation while acting as a bridge between other institutes and industries related to the sector,” the chief minister said.
Uttar Pradesh is currently the sixth largest state in terms of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, but the chief minister aims to make it the leading state in the country.
The state’s contribution to pharma manufacturing in the country is currently 2 per cent, which needs to be increased to 10-12 percent to achieve the numero uno position.
“With high-level research institutes like IITR, CDRI, CIMAP, and NBRI already functional in the state, along with academic institutions like SGPGI and KGMU, Uttar Pradesh has great potential for growth in the pharmaceutical sector,” the chief minister added.
He further said that the proposed Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation Institute would prepare a detailed action plan regarding the nature of the institute, assess future needs of the pharmaceutical sector, and submit a detailed action plan within the next 15 days.
“Suitable land will be identified for this in Lucknow. The institute is expected to play a major role in pharmaceutical research in Uttar Pradesh,” the chief minister said.
“To encourage the pharmaceutical industry, we must concentrate on all three of these areas—quality educational institutions, research labs, and industry,” he concluded.
The government spokesman said that Lucknow had emerged as a biopharma hub in the last few years. AKTU and other technical educational institutions were capable of providing human resources for the pharmaceutical sector. While the process of construction of Pharma Park was going on in the state, Medical Device Park was also to be constructed.
