Toeing the Delhi government line, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to implement Odd-Even car scheme in the state to check air pollution.

Forest Minister Dara Singh Chauhan said in Lucknow on Monday that Traffic police brass had been asked to be ready to implement the Odd-Even formula in the state.

Once implemented, Uttar Pradesh will be the second state to do so.

“Orders have been issued in this regard. Traffic police brass and DGP have been directed to implement the Odd-Even scheme. The police can only tell when the scheme will begin,” Chauhan said.

The Forest Minister’s statement comes on the day when the Odd-Even scheme kicked off in the national capital Delhi. This is the third time that such restrictions have been imposed in Delhi.

Under the Odd-Even formula, cars with registration numbers ending with even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) will be allowed to run on even dates, and those with odd numbers (1,3,5,7 and 9) on odd dates.

With the car rationing scheme, the government aims to restrict the number of cars plying on roads to bring down pollution caused by vehicles.

On the first day of the Odd-Even scheme, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal carpooled to work with two of his cabinet colleagues while Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia rode a bicycle to work.
