With an aim to improve basic urban facilities, the UP government has approved a proposal to set up Mukhyamantri Nagar Srijan Yojana. It will set up the guidelines to upgrade, expand and create new urban local bodies.

“The benefits of basic urban facilities like roads, parks, drains, community halls, schools, Anganwadi centres and power sector infrastructure to citizens in newly-created or border expanded regions will be provided on priority,” Urban Development Minister AK Sharma said.

He said that under this scheme, initially 191 urban areas which have been expanded since 2017 would be taken up. Funds will be allocated according to the prescribed formula, which centres around the population of the region. The formula says that 90 per cent will be on population and 10 per cent on the expanded areas.

“If more funds are required than the allocated amount, the urban development minister is authorised for deviation of the funds on the basis of the report of the district magistrates concerned,” Sharma said.

A provision of Rs 550 crore has been made in the budget of the financial year 2022-23 under this scheme. Of this, a sum of Rs 366.30 crore is for newly-created nagar panchayat, Rs 53.35 crore for border extended nagar panchayat, Rs 58.85 crore for border extended nagar palika parishad and Rs 71.50 crore for border extended municipal corporation.

The cabinet approved the proposals for extension of boundaries of Nagar Panchayat Khaga of Fatehpur district and Nigohi, Nagar Panchayat of Shahjahanpur district.
