The State government suspended Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muzaffarnagar Subhash Chandra Dubey, who was posted in riot torn area, with immediate effect on Sunday.

A department probe has been ordered against Dubey and a showcase notice had been served to him seeking explanation that why he did not act to stop the violence.

According to official sources, Dubey, who has now been transferred and attached with the DGP office after the riots erupted, has been put on suspension. The sources said that it was the beginning of action being taken against officials for failure to curb violence in Muzaffarnagar. The suspension of Dubey was the first action against the official in this connection.

The suspension came in the wake of the visit of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to riot-hit Muzaffarnagar and Shamli district, on Sunday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi are expected to visit Muzaffarnagar tomorrow.

Interestingly, Dubey was posted at Muzaffarnagar after the August 27 incident in which three youths were killed. later the aftermath of killing of the youths triggered the violence when two maha-panchayats of August 31 and September 7 were organised.

Dubey was posted after IPS officer Manjil Saini, who was in Muzaffarnagar during the initial murders at Kawal village on August 27, was removed from the SSP post. Dubey was removed from the post of SSP on September 9 and now Praveen Kumar Rai has been made the SSP of Muzaffarnagar.
