Samajwadi Party on Tuesday alleged wide-spread irregularities in the electoral rolls of Uttar Pradesh, saying over 16.50 lakh names had been deleted from the electoral rolls.

A delegation of the SP led by party’s state president Naresh Uttam submitted a memorandum to the chief electoral officer of the UP.

The state goes to assembly polls early next year.

Naresh Uttam alleged that the government was misusing the state machinery and the bureaucracy for arbitrarily deleting names from the electoral rolls. He also claimed that the government was obstructing the smooth implementation of the electoral roll revision.

The SP leader alleged that large-scale irregularities and malpractices had been detected during the electoral roll revision. He said as per information compiled by the SP, close to 16.50 lakh names had been deleted from the rolls in several districts of the state.

He said the Election Commission on Monday published electoral rolls of 403 assembly constituencies of the state. He said the Election Commission had launched electoral roll revision exercise from November 1 to November 30.

Naresh Uttam said from January 16 to October 31 this year, a large number of new voters were added and names were deleted and amended. He said no verification was done before the addition, deletion and amendments in the voter lists. He said the SP had demanded from the Election Commission that the details of each name added or deleted should be made available at each assembly constituency before the 2022 UP elections.
