Situation is under control on AMU campus: Jain

PNS

Even as uneasy calm prevailed on the Aligarh Muslim University campus on Monday, which was witness to a clash claiming two lives, the Teachers Association of the Central University demanded a CBI probe into Saturday night's violence. Even after 48 hours having elapsed, the police failed to nab any of the 40 named trouble makers.

Meanwhile, IG (Public Grievances) Ashok Mutha Jain told media persons in lucknow on Monday evening, "The situation remains tense but under control on the AMU campus and heavy force including Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed to prevent any exigency."

Jain said that four separate cases have been registered and investigations are underway. He too admitted that despite 'best efforts' no one could be arrested so far in this connection.

On Monday, at an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee of AMU Teachers Association (AMUTA), a resolution was passed that illegal occupants in hostels of the varsity were acting with impunity as they were getting 'patronage from some sections of the varsity administration'.

The common refrain was that the present crisis on the campus was a result of a 'power struggle' within the varsity administration for peddling favours and obliging favourites.

The resolution further said that only a CBI probe would 'reveal the sponsors and financers' of the conspiracy leading to such large scale violence on teh campus.

Menwhile AMUTA Secretary Mustafa Zaidi told newspersons that the violent outburst was a fall out of accumulated mishandling caused by 'gross violation of norms and rocedures' by the varsity brass in recent years.

On Saturday night, two student groups came to a head on the AMU campus in which students torched the Proctor's office and vehicles parked there. The clash in which guns were freely used, left an expelled student dead along with another youth while a student suffered critically injuries.

The violence started at the Aftab Hall when warring students clashed over a verbal spat which occurred a few days back at the Maulana Azad library canteen.
