Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asked his party workers not to get demoralised by the party’s dismal performance in the just-concluded lok Sabha election.

“Politics is a game in which both victory and defeat happen,” Rahul said while addressing party cadre on his first visit to his parliamentary constituency Amethi after his face-saving victory.

“This is the time of struggle for us, we will fight it out to bounce back soon,” he told the Congress workers in an attempt to boost their morale.

Rahul, who was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Vadra, said the Congressmen should keep their energy high because all parties face victory and defeat in politics.

“The Congress will oppose the anti-people policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party government and work hard to ensure that the people get their due,” he said.

The Congress vice-president said the party leaders would soon review the party’s performance in the just-concluded election and the process would begin from Amethi.

He also thanked the people for their support to the Congress in the election. Both Rahul and Priyanka also met the people affected by the major fire that gutted 64 houses in Vidhan ka Purva village of Jamo. They assured all possible assistance to the victims and also interacted with them.

later, the brother-sister duo went to the Congress office in Gauriganj and garlanded the portrait of their father, late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary.

On the occasion, Priyanka thanked the people for their support to Congress and their faith in Rahul. She assured them of her support and presence in their bad times.

At the meeting, when some party workers pointed to the need to review the fall in Rahul’s victory margin, Priyanka, who had spearheaded her brother’s campaign, said that she would again come for this purpose after a week.

Rahul and Priyanka later went to Fursatganj and left for New Delhi. Earlier, the brother-sister duo were given a warm welcome at the Fursatganj airstrip on their arrival on Wednesday morning.

Rahul’s visit to Amethi comes a few days after he and Congress president Sonia Gandhi offered to resign at the Congress Working Committee meet. However, the Congress leaders rejected the offer.

Rahul has won the Amethi lok Sabha seat with a margin of over one lakh votes. last time, he had won from the same seat by a margin of over 3.70 lakh votes.

Amethi and Rae Bareli are the only two parliamentary constituencies that the Congress has won in UP in the 2014 lok Sabha polls. While Rahul has been elected from Amethi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has retained her Rae Bareli seat.
