A prison inmate under trial attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a sharp object in the court lock-up.
The incident took place in Gorakhpur on Wednesday morning.
Fellow prisoners who saw the victim lying in a serious condition informed the policemen after which they rushed him to the district hospital where doctors claimed his condition was ‘critical’.
According to information received here, the prisoners were brought to the court and put up in the lock-up on Wednesday morning to later be produced in court during the course of trial later in the day.
The cops deployed for lock-up security were stunned when some prisoners raised an alarm that a prisoner had tried to slit his throat. The cops rushed there but waited for other policemen to reach before opening the lock-up gate and found one of the prisoners lying in a pool of blood. He had slit his throat with a broken spoon. The policemen rushed the injured prisoner to the district hospital.
The local police registered a case in this regard and identified the prisoner as Bunty, a resident of Surajkund, who was lodged in jail in some cases.
As Bunty had to appear in court for trial on Wednesday, he was brought with other prisoners and put in the lock-up. The cops said that earlier also, he had tried to commit suicide in the court lock-up in the same way.
Bunty confessed to having brought the spoon from the jail. Further investigations are on in this regard.
