Police to go hi-tech during lS polls

Pioneer News Service, PS

State police would go hi-tech in the coming Parliament elections following launch of a software that would inable the officers to deploy and monitor force movement on-line. Even the duty card will be computerised. The entire exercise would help the Department to finish the biggest democratic exercise of the world with minimum hands.

The modalities to successfully switch over to on-line operations have been discussed during a workshop on `Managing Election Deployment' attended by members of the IPS Association. ``We examined good pratices from UP as well from other states and the best have been documented to switch over to computerised deployment of force in the coming Parliament elections", disclosed Director General of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Ranjan Dwivedi, who is also president of the IPS Association. He claimed here on Tuesday evening that some of the members of the Association had used software program for better election management.

He claimed that following their committment for use of later technologies in the Police Department during recently concluded Police Week, they developed the software which would now help them to easily deploy the force through computerisation of duty charts, force to be deployed etc. He claimed that the workshop explored the possibilities of using IT for managing election deployment  for operational and financial efficiency. The election cells in districts normally need 20 to 25 personnel for writing registers, duty cards, attendance sheets etc. If a software is used this work can be easily done by just 2 to 3 cops saving a huge number of man power. With the software duty cards, attendance sheets, etc would become more streamlined and useful, he claimed. Each police person will be intimated about his duty, place of stay, etc through SMS.

Dwivdi further claimed that the software has been used successfully in Districts Aligarh, Mainpuri, Ferozabad, Badaun, Agra and, Bijnore. The workshop also explored the integration of the software with the personnel management system. The Technical Services will explore this and while the larger integration is coded and the system is made ready, given the short time, in case it is not available in the coming election, the interested Superintendents Districts will be able to use the basic module. He said that the need for an online system of data collection is quite necessary. Technical Services officers volunteered to explore this and work with potential vendors. The workshop was also attended by Prashant Kumar (DIG Elections) and senior IPS officers.
