Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders and workers on Tuesday fought a pitched battle with the police on being stopped from marching towards the Assembly during a protest against the Yogi and Modi governments on Tuesday. Several senior leaders including Congress legislature Party leader Ajay Kumar lalu, were seriously injured in the cane charge and they were taken to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital.

The Congress agitation was led by state Congress chief Raj Babbar and party’s ClP leader Ajay Kumar lalu at the Gandhi Bhawan in lucknow. However, the police resorted to lathicharge after Congress workers tried to march towards the Vidhan Bhawan to highlight the failures of the state and central  governments.

In the ensuing lathicharge, several Congress workers and leaders including Ajay Kumar lallu wereinjured. Around 100 people were also detained by the police and released after some time.

lalu alleged that the party workers were staging a peaceful protest and the police indulged in unprovoked lathicharge. “Several of our workers were injured and some had to be rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Earlier addressing party workers on the occasion of `Bharat Bachao’ call given by the party to expose Central government, Babbar said that the Modi government failed on all fronts and not a single promise made during the last Parliament election or Assembly elections in UP, were fulfilled.

Babbar said that that Modi government not only failed but adopted a dictatorial approach to crush any voice raised against the Central or state governments.

Congress MP Sanjay Singh along with All India Youth Congress president Keshav Chandra Yadav, former MP Anu Tandon also addressed the workers and leaders.

later reacting to the brutal police lathi charge, veteral Congress leader Pramod Tewari said that it reminded the people of British regime which tried to crush any voice raised against them. He said that both Modi and Yogi regimes have imposed ‘undeclared emergency’ and snatched all democratic rights of the people.

“If the brutal lathi charge on Congress workers is not government-sponsored then I challeng Yogi to constitute a probe under a High Court judge and ensure stern action against the officers responsible for the attack,” Tewari said. State Congress chief Raj Babbar, who visited the hospital to meet the injured leaders on Tuesday evening, said that the Yogi government was now frustrated over its decreasing popularity and wanted to silence opposition parties particularly the Congress to mask their failures. “The state government is trying to forcibly muzzle our voices by using force but we will not stop our agitation under pressure. We will fight to safeguard democracy and ensure justice to every people. The people will throw out the BJP from the Central and state governments,” Babbar asserted.
