A notorious criminal, Chandrama Prasad, was arrested during a police encounter in which he sustained bullet injury in an exchange of fire with police in Pakdi area under Tarva police station of Azamgarh district on Friday late night.

His accomplices managed to escape.

Azamgarh’s Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said that on getting inputs about the movement of some criminals between Pakadi Bazar and Mudehari village who planned to loot a jeweller, cops of Tarva police station cordoned off the area near Pakadi crossing on Friday night. During vehicle checking the cops tried to stop three motorcycle-borne persons who tried to escape. However, the motorcycle skidded and fell on the road.

Arya said that after the motorcycle fell, the trio opened indiscriminate fire on the police team. The cops returned the fire. After the firing stopped, the police combed the area and found one miscreant lying on the road with bullet injury in his leg while his accomplices had managed to escape.

Apart from a country-made revolver, live cartridges and a motorcycle were recovered from him.

Arya said that during interrogation, the injured criminal disclosed his identity as Chandrama Prasad. He said 20 cases, mainly of loot, were registered against Chandrama with Azamgarh and Delhi police. He had recently come out of Tihar Jail in Delhi and had started reassembling his gang.
