Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati alleged that the New Metro Rail Policy announced by Narendra Modi Government on Wednesday was Rs anti-people’ and would adversely affect proposed Metro Rail projects in UP and across the country.

Mayawati said that traffic arrangement of big cities will also be badly affected by the new policy of stopping the Centre’s contribution in Metro Rail construction and constructing it with help from private sector.

In a statement issued ion lucknow on Thursday, Mayawati said that the new policy will adversely affect expansion of lucknow Metro Rail and establishment of Metros in cities like Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad and others. The BSP chief was reacting a day after the Union cabinet approved the new Metro Rail Policy which opens a window for private investments across a range of operations.

Criticizing the new policy, Mayawati said that the BJP government’s initiative will strengthen capitalists in the country while commoners will not benefit from it. “The new policy has made ‘participation of private players and capitalists necessary’ in Metro Rail projects. The government is running away from its responsibilities. This will render setting up of new Metro projects impossible,” Mayawati alleged.

The former UP Chief Minister further claimed that the Centre was reducing its share in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. “The Centre’s aim is to somehow get the word ‘Prime Minister’ afixed to all schemes to gain mileage and publicity,” Mayawati charged without elaborating further.
