Expressing concern over non-inclusion of over 40 lakh people from National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in Assam, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati accused the BJP governments at the Centre and Assam for indulging in divisive politics to gain political mileage. “By removing names of 40 lakh people from religious and linguistic minorities in Assam from the NRC list, the BJP governments at the Centre and Assam have achieved their political agenda of engaging divisive politics all over the country,” asserted Mayawati.
Apprehending unrest in Assam and other parts of the country over the development, Mayawati, in a press statement released in lucknow on Tuesday, claimed that an all-party meeting was needed to hammer out necessary remedial measures. She said that the Central government should not further complicate the matter on the pretext of carryingit out on court orders as the Centre has been ‘continuously flouting’ court orders. The BSP chief alleged that there was anarchy and commotion all over the country because of the ‘narrow, casteist, communal and divisive policies’ of the BJP and its governments in UP too was affected by it. She alleged that in west UP, said to be BSP’s stronghold, Dalits and Muslims were being booked under Gangsters Act or other heinous crimes to apply pressure. She demanded that immediate steps be taken to stop the ‘malicious campaign’ against these sections.
