Continuing its attack on the NDA government at the Centre and in UP, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday accused the rling party for being least concerned to save cows despite making it a big issue during the last Assembly elections in the state.

Mayawati alleged that the poor condition of cows at government-aided shelters and the death of cows in BJP-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, clearly pointed towards siphoning of huge government funds for cow protection.

“They made ‘Gau Mata’ a political issue and accusing members of other community for slaughter during elections. So, are they now meting out such cruel treatment to the cows and being lax in ‘gau sewa’ (service),” she asked.

BSP chief also targeted the BJP’s `good goverance’ slogan at the state and the Centre. “Under the so-called good governance of BJP governments, the situation is so bad that there is no value of humans and now cows were also being neglected and dying in government-aided ‘gaushalas’ (cow shelters) in these states due to rampant corruption,” the former CM said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Mayawati dared the Sangh leaders to break their silence over the poor condition of cows and seek approproiate and satisfactory answers from the BJP governments.

Expressing concern, the BSP chief asked the government to  review schemes related to cow protection and curb corruption so that cowshelters did not transform into slaughter houses and the religious beliefs of people were not hurt.

Referring to attacks by cow vigilantes, Mayawati alleged that atrocities were being committed on people after accusing them of killing cows thereby creating an atmosphere of fear in the country.

“In BJP-ruled states like Haryana, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, gau mata was being subjected to cruelty in cow shelters by caretakers who were embezzling government funds,” said the BSP chief.

Recently a local BJP leader in Durg, Chhattisgarh was arrested after 27 cows within three days at his government-aided gaushala even as the accused claimed that the bovines died due to a wall collapse.
