The Gorakhpur unit of Congress is likely to remain aloof from the party’s proposed ‘Bharat Bachao Rally’ in Delhi on Saturday.
Instead of participating in the Delhi rally, the party workers would court arrest after staging a protest in the district against the recently-passed Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
Sources said that during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Gorakhpur on Wednesday, district unit chief Nirmala Paswan demanded that the Bill be immediately taken back by the Union government. She threatened that if the Bill was not withdrawn, Congressmen would intensify their protests on Saturday and court arrest to exert pressure on the government.
Interestingly, the deadline of Saturday set by Paswan for courting arrests in Gorakhpur clashes with the date of the proposed Congress rally in the national capital to highlight various burning issues staring the nation.
Paswan, who burnt a copy of the CAB during protest, said AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had asked partymen to fight on the streets against the CAB as the Bharatiya Janata Party government was implementing its “Sanghi Constitution” based on caste and communal division.
